Assembly automation for Component Alignment Sensors
Prodrive Technologies is a developer and manufacturer of world-class electronics. It comprises over 1300 employees and is one of the fastest growing companies in Europe. Our organization is mostly based on two groups: Development and Operations. The Development department is oriented at developing first-class electronic, mechanic and software solutions. The operations department is responsible for production, assembly, testing and life-cycle-management of electronic products and systems in the range of 1 to more than a million pieces per year.
Prodrive develops Component Alignment Sensors (CAS) for the placement head of pick-and-place machines. By rotating a component within the optical path of the CAS, the centre of rotation and the deviation with respect to the placement head can be calculated. With the knowledge of this deviation and using this information as feedback for the pick-and-place machines, the placement of the components can be executed with more precision. The CAS product is currently assembled by hand. Because of this, the labour intensity and the chance of failure is high.
The goal of the assignment is to create an automated solution which takes care of the placement, gluing and curing of the three optical components (which are shown in the picture below) within the CAS. It is important because the performance of the CAS is predominantly determined by the placement of these optical components. This property only works when the three optical components within CAS are placed within the tight tolerances of ±10 µm. A solution needs to be found to combine automatic gripping, placement of the optical components and glue dispensing.
- Pre-study document (literature study) of possible solutions.
- Design of chosen solutions.
- Integration of chosen solutions into existing systems.
- Tests to verify the implementation.
Important note: all our graduation assignments are dependent on time. Please see them as an example of the many great things you can do at Prodrive Technologies. If you have the same passion for technology as we do, we always have an assignment for you!
