Design of a robust sensor system for an autonomous robot in a manufacturing environment

Context

Prodrive technologies is a developer and manufacturer of world-class electronics. It comprises over 1300 employees and is one of the fastest growing companies in Europe. Our organization is based on two groups: Development and Operations. The Development department is oriented at developing first-rate electronic, mechanic and software solutions. The operations department is responsible for production, assembly, testing and life-cycle-management of electronic products and systems in the range of 1 to more than a million pieces per year.

Recently, Prodrive has developed AGVs to support factory logistic automation. AGVs are vehicles which autonomously transport goods (e.g. boxes with materials). AGVs are used within a production and warehouse environment for logistic purposes (i.e. goods flow). Our first prototypes are already operating in our production facilities. Currently we are improving these prototypes to market-ready products.
Imagine factories with hundreds of mobile robots driving around 24/7, handling internal logistics to keep the factories running at maximum capacity. A lot of data about the robots and the environment is gathered and could be used to improve, for example, path planning and task scheduling methods, or give rise to entirely new methods. Anticipating large numbers of mobile robots in our own factories and elsewhere, we want to capitalise on the availability of this data by using machine learning models to control our mobile robots.

Assignment

Design a robust sensor system for an autonomous robot in a manufacturing environment.

Deliverables

  • Literature study on the current state-of-the-art of sensing systems for vehicles. Research on pedestrian classification in cars might be relevant, but other sensors and classification techniques could be used as well.
  • Based on the literature review, motivate sensor choice and classification algorithm
  • Gather reference data with a (simplified) sensor setup
  • Use this data to train/validate the chosen sensor system
