PM2.5 sensor

Air pollution is a serious threat to human health. PM2.5, also known as fine particles, is an important indicator of air quality.  Measuring PM2.5 provides much-needed insight to improve air quality inside a car. The Prodrive Technologies automotive PM2.5 sensor is developed for in-vehicle use, measuring fine particles inside and outside the car simultaneously. Based on these measurements, the fresh air intake, filtering and recirculation control can be optimized to improve interior air quality. Moreover, the difference between outside and inside air quality can be visualized through the Human Machine Interface (HMI) of the car.

Accurate measurements to improve air quality

The information from the PM2.5 sensor can be used to improve air quality in a vehicle. Besides that, interior and exterior air quality can be displayed to inform the driver. The sensor provides information to control the heating / ventilation / air-conditioning (HVAC) system in the vehicle. For instance, if the level of fine particles suddenly increases, the HVAC system can act upon this. This way, it is possible to prevent polluted air from coming in and recirculate interior air. A display informs the driver about the difference between interior and exterior air quality. Furthermore, the performance of the vehicle’s air filtering system can be shown.

Automotive PM2.5 sensor system

Apart from the particle sensor itself, an integral PM2.5 sensing solution is provided. The product consists of a smart air intake system to filter the right particles. Furthermore, computing algorithms correct the measurement values taking into account the variables of an automotive environment.

Dual channel

Thanks to the sensor’s dual channel, it measures interior and exterior air in parallel. This enables a real-time comparison of interior and exterior air quality. Based on this valuable information, an accurate HVAC strategy can be implemented. Besides that, the difference in air quality between the inside and outside of the vehicle can be displayed to the driver.

Automotive environment

This unique PM2.5 sensor is designed and qualified for mass production. The sensor can be integrated in HVAC systems of vehicles. The design for automotive environments results in accurate PM2.5 measurements:

  • Insensitivity to driving wind, cabin blower speed and side wind
  • It has a stable PM2.5 range selection and a wide functional temperature range
  • The measurements are tolerant for shock and vibration
  • The system is maintenance free because of a smart optics contamination protection mechanism
Vehicle integration

Prodrive Technologies can provide packaging and vehicle integration support, including calibration and vehicle testing.

Ready to use products are available, also customized sensing solutions can be offered on request. This way Prodrive Technologies can create the optimum solution for you. For instance related to HVAC integration or integration of other sensors.

Software interface

The software interface is customized for OEM. Communication is via LIN or optionally CAN. Besides standard data, extensive data can be shared with the car. More information can be found in the datasheet.

Additional sensors

To provide more information to the driver about the particles and gasses in the air, additional sensors can be integrated into the sensor. Besides relative humidity (RH) and temperature, these include CO, NO₂ and NH₃. Carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) from traffic emissions largely contribute to smog in large cities, and are especially harmful to human health.

Air quality and human health

Around the world people suffer from poor air quality on a daily basis. Long-term or high peak exposure to high concentrations of polluted air is associated with a range of bad health effects such as respiratory infections, lung- and cardiovascular diseases.

About PM2.5

Fine particles or PM2.5 describe particulate matter that is 2.5 micrometer (µm) in diameter, or smaller. These particles are produced from all types of combustion, including motor vehicles and industrial processes. Particles smaller than 10 µm are not filtered by the nose or throat. This means small particles end up in the lungs where the body cannot easily remove them. Health studies show associations between exposure to fine particles and lung- and cardiovascular diseases. Reducing the level of fine particles inside the car therefore helps to reduce the harmful effects to human health.
