Novel power topology for gradient amplifiers

Context

Prodrive Technologies is a developer and manufacturer of world-class electronics. It comprises over 1300 employees and is one of the fastest growing companies in Europe. Our organization is mostly based on two groups: Development and Operations. The Development department is oriented at developing first-class electronic, mechanic and software solutions. The operations department is responsible for production, assembly, testing and life-cycle-management of electronic products and systems in the range of 1 to more than a million pieces per year.

Prodrive Technologies has developed a series of gradient amplifiers that are used in 3 axis gradient systems for MRI scanners. The gradient amplifier generates the current through the gradient coils and consists of 3 amplifier modules that share a common power supply. In order to quickly create variations in the magnectic field of an MRI scanner, high voltage and high current is required (e.g. 2100V, 1200A for NG2200). Accuracy, reliability and lifetime are very important for a gradient amplifier. The amplifiers are extremely lineair while making 1200A output current with a settling-time less than 100µs. It is expected that in the future there will be a demand for amplifiers with more capabilities, higher reliability, faster settling time and lower cost.

Assignment

The new converter topology shall be chosen such that it allows high current capabilities with reduced hardware complexity. You, as a student, will design and investigate a new amplifier topology for future gradient amplifiers. The new amplifier requires a new control strategy that could be a major or minor part of your assignment, depending on your preference. You will assess the feasibility of the new converter topology.  Prodrive Technologies provides all required test facilities for this project and the gradient amplifier development team is available for support and reviews.

 

The focus of the assignment may be adjusted to one or more of these topics:

  • Control design
  • Modelling
  • Power electronics
  • Magnetic design
  • Testing and measurement

Deliverables

  • A pre-study with conceptual choices for a new power amplifier topology (>2MVA)
  • Detailed models of the amplifier end-stage
  • A novel control strategy
  • Practical measurement results that demonstrate your findings
