Magnetics Designer

The trend for rapid electrification in virtually all applications and markets, coupled with the targeted low cost, high efficiency and high-power density, have pushed the boundaries of Power Conversion ever since the beginning of the century. Major contributors to decreased converter performance have been the various magnetic components, ranging from simple power inductors and EMC chokes to multi-winding transformers and fluxgate current sensors.

We at Prodrive Technologies, have identified the power of designing optimized solutions and producing many of them in-house. Custom components tailored towards the individual converters allow for a highly integrated solutions that feature lower overall system cost, losses and volume. As the demand for such systems is continuously growing, more and more custom magnetic components are needed, which is why Prodrive has set up a group of experts responsible for the development and testing of such components.

The main responsibilities of the Magnetics Designer are:

  • Identify the most suitable technologies for the given magnetic problem based on the given component requirements.
  • Recognize opportunities to optimise the product by tightly collaborating with the project team and finding the best balance between semiconductor, magnetic, EMC and thermal design.
  • Perform various FEM simulations to verify new concepts and/or the magnetic and thermal performance of the proposed designs.
  • Cooperate with the manufacturing team to achieve a highly-reproduceable solution with low manufacturing costs.
  • Create a test plan and execute it in Prodrive’s world-class lab to verify the performance of the designed components.

Example applications include, among others:

Profile

    • Deep understanding of the fundamental electromagnetism and power conversion principles, and passion for pushing the boundaries of magnetic components.
    • Experience with FEM simulation tools –  Magnetic, Thermal, Electrostatic FEM packages, e.g., Altair Flux 2D/3D, FloEFD, FEMM.
    • Experience with MATLAB, 3D design software practise is a bonus (e.g., Siemens NX).
    • Basic understanding of the measurement equipment – LCR meters, frequency analysers, current bias sources as well as thermal qualification tools (IR thermal cameras, thermocouples, thermal chambers/ovens).
    • Hands-on mentality
