I started at Prodrive Technologies as a third-year Software Engineering student, still unsure of what exactly I wanted to do with my career. Prodrive gave me the opportunity to explore different fields, technologies, and projects, and helped me to learn more about myself.

My day at work always begins at 7 AM with a workout at the gym. It is amazing that Prodrive gives me the opportunity to do sports at the campus before work. Then, work starts with checking the pull requests I’ve submitted for code review or preparing for early meetings. I love reading nice jokes left by my colleagues in the comments of my pull requests. They get the day started properly. Afterward, I focus on the tasks that have to be completed for the day or week and sometimes distract myself with funny team chats with my colleagues.

I’m currently working on “renovating” the Prodrive Robot Solutions (PRS) application by re-designing its architecture and modernizing the application using new technologies. The PRS application is a solution designed to work as the middleman between technicians, in-house automation cells, and other systems for product assembly operations. It can interact with physical inputs and outputs, as well as any other system within the Prodrive infrastructure. I find this project the perfect opportunity to learn new software concepts, programming patterns, and modern technologies. It allows me to improve my coding skills and explore the ever-changing world of Software Engineering.

Working in the PRS team involves not only software engineering knowledge, but also knowing a thing or two about the hardware in an automation cell. I, as a person who usually hates hardware and has no experience with embedded programming, jumped way out of my comfort zone when joining this project. That was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I’m not going to lie, I am still afraid of the big robots in the cells, especially when they are moving. Since I joined the PRS team, I have added a great amount of knowledge, both software and hardware related. Being surrounded by so many smart people is amazing because you learn so much. And that is the best thing about Prodrive. It provides you with many opportunities to grow, improve and express yourself.

Personal improvement is the one thing a person should never stop investing time or resources in.

Before starting my journey at Prodrive, I already knew a lot about the company from my friends who worked there. They all spoke passionately about the challenges they solve in their daily work. During one of these conversations, I found myself thinking: “I also want to be challenged!”.

That thought was my motivation to do my graduation thesis at Prodrive. The company provided me with the freedom to choose any project. When I applied, I was not sure what specific project I wanted to work on. So, HR connected me with colleagues from different projects, which simplified the decision for me.

I am now part of the PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) team with whom we are developing an internal product lifecycle management tool. Yes, we could have bought one, but why if we can do it better ourselves? Or at least we think we can. My goal is to improve searching functionality within the tool. To achieve this, I created my own search language, which is similar to SQL, but specific to the context of the PLM tool.

My day starts with a cup of coffee and a daily stand-up with the team. During the stand-up, we discuss what we are struggling with, how far we have come, or just tell others how our weekend went. After the stand-up, I usually get back to my tasks, which could be either learning, designing, programming, or writing documentation. I love the variety in my tasks.

Despite the times of the pandemic, I feel like I’m part of the team, although we have never met offline. Whenever I got stuck, I turned to my colleagues for help. They were always happy to explore the problem together, which I take as an opportunity to exchange knowledge and learn something new.

Solving challenges kills boredom. Prodrive always has new challenges, so you will never get bored here!

My current project, which started as my graduation project, is to create a program that generates certificates or passwords, which are programmed into products that are manufactured in our own factory.

While that might sound easy, it easily becomes complex when you factor in scalability, globalization, and security. Especially with security, you really can’t afford to make any mistakes. Furthermore, demands from the factory change often, which makes every day unique.

I always start my day around 9 AM. After either logging in from home or arriving at the office, the first thing I do is get a coffee and review some code. Soon it’s time for the daily stand-up with my co-workers, where we discuss who will be working on which item for the day.

After this stand-up, I usually grab another coffee and might discuss relevant issues and updates with our stakeholders. After that, I’ll start either working on documentation or writing code. It won’t be long until it’s time to head to the company gym for my daily workouts.

When returning from the gym with some of my co-workers, it’s time to grab some lunch. Our own catering provides delicious meals to keep all of us happy and healthy.

After lunch, I get back to work. Around 3 PM, I will have a break together with my coworkers where we talk about anything we want to discuss. After this break meeting, it’s time to do some more code reviews and coding.

Before I know it, it’s already time for dinner. The catering team always surprises me with what they put on the menu. After dinner, I might write or review some more code before it’s already time to go home.

Engineering has as many social challenges as technical challenges.
